"Ancestral Coat Check" ~ 9.5"x17" painting reproduction on paper

My first painting on canvas (2' x 4' x 3.5") in almost a decade was inspired by a dream where a pigment covered lion quickly danced and rubbed its body across a wall creating paintings that came to life. As I watched, I realized that the lion's body were my very own hands. I recalled this vision while smudging the fresh canvas with palo santo smoke and then began to quickly smear the burnt edge of the palo santo stick onto the canvas in the same movements that the lion (my hands) displayed in the dream. I used fingertip puppet paint brushes dipped in water to smear the ash in an expressive manner. Initially, there was no plan of where the lion head(s) would appear and this developed organically as I began to see multiple lion heads appear in the chaos of form. Charcoal was used to explore the remaining heads and acrylic paint was used to refine and add contrast. The human head(s) in the upper right corner were also a spontaneous find and may symbolize the human dreamer(s).

Originally created for the "Out Like a Lion" show at Swan Dive, Austin, TX, April 2015 benefiting Art From the Streets, the nonprofit organization nurturing homeless artistic expression.

Created with dream inspiration, palo santo ash, charcoal and acrylic paint.
